THE V-BOMBER COLLECTION

The Avro Vulcan is a delta-wing, high-altitude strategic bomber and one of the legendary V Bombers developed as part of the United Kingdom’s airborne nuclear deterrent. Without doubt, it became the most famous aircraft of the trio. Although primary armed with nuclear weapons, the Vulcan was also capable of carrying conventional bombs, most notably during its combat debut in Operation Black Buck, the long range airstrikes carried out during the Falkland conflict.

In your possession is a tag crafted from material taken from the most celebrated Vulcan B.2 of all – XH558.

Delivered on 1 July 1960 to the 230 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Waddington, XH558 initially served in crew training roles at RAF Scampton and Finningley. From 1961 to 1984, the aircraft was based at Waddington, where it fulfilled its strategic role as a nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

From 1985 to 1992, XH558 served with the RAF Vulcan Display Flight, appearing at airshows across the United Kingdom and becoming a beloved symbol of British aviation heritage. In 1993, the aircraft retired to Bruntingthorpe, where it later entered civilian ownership.

Following an extraordinary restoration to its full airworthy condition, XH558 returned to the skies in 2007, allowing millions of aviation enthusiasts across the world to once again witness this British icon grace the skies, exactly where it belonged.

On 28 October 2015, XH558 took its final flight, making its distinctive howl from the Olympus-powered intakes echoing across the sky one last time.

Today, XH558 resides at former RAF Finningley, now Doncaster Airport, where dedicated aviation enthusiasts maintain the aircraft in taxi capable condition and carry out regular engine runs, preserving the living spirit of this remarkable bomber.

The Handley Page Victor is a British strategic bomber and one of the famous “V Bombers”, developed as part of the United Kingdom’s airborne nuclear deterrent. First flown in 1952 and entering service in 1958, the bomber looked strikingly futuristic and, in classic British fashion was remarkably well engineered.

 The development of the bomber had its roots in the British atomic bomb programme, which was launched under Air Staff Operation Requirement OR.1001. This requirement paved the way for the development of the iconic V Bombers – the Valiant, Vulcan, and finally the Victor. However, with the Cold War arms race in full swing, Royal Navy introduced submarine-based Polaris missiles in the late 1960s, reducing the need for a large fleet of strategic bombers.

A total of 86 Victor Bombers were produced, several of which were later modified for strategic reconnaissance duties, while others were converted into aerial refuelling tankers. Perhaps, the most famous use of Victor in its tanker role came during the Black Buck raids of the Falklands War, when Victors were used to refuel the Vulcan bombers on their long-range missions.

 The tag in your possession was crafted from the nose landing gear door of XL158, a Victor B.2 that served with 139 Squadron and the Victor Training Flight before being converted into a K.2 tanker in 1970. XL158 was scrapped in 1993, but a number of its parts were preserved by a Handley Page Victor enthusiast from Norwich, who carefully kept them over the years until parting with the door at auction in 2023.
