At the time of downing, the aircraft was operated by the ‘Wagner PMC’, who fought on the side of the Russian invaders in Ukraine. The Sukhoi reportedly was downed on December 2, 2022 near Klishchiivka (Donetsk Region) during the battle of Bakhmut. Both the pilot Alexander Antonov and the navigator Vladimir Nikishin died in the crash. The aircraft was shot down by the well-coordinated and brave actions of the Ukrainian State Board Guard troops using MANPADS.
Enemy ‘Fencers’ of any model are a rare catch in Ukraine and the recovery of this aircraft was of great significance for the Ukrainian forces. The courageous fighters of the 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade at the risk of their own lives, using their quad bikes and drones and carrying the instruments by hand, managed to access the crash site and retrieve the pieces which they could carry under the relentless and incessant gunfire. The fearlessness and heroism of these soldiers made it possible for collectors, like yourself, to own this tag and support the Ukrainian military!
