Description
The 2TE116 is a broad gauge double section diesel locomotive developed and manufactured by Luhanskteplovoz (formerly VZOR) in the early 70’s in the city of Luhansk, Ukraine (Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic at a time). The locomotive was designed for 1,520mm gauge track (also known as broad gauge) and was used extensively to haul heavy freight and passenger trains. The locomotive also received a few nicknames among the railway enthusiasts, such as ‘Hunchback’ (for the characteristic shape of the roof), ‘Fantomas’ and ‘Boeing’.
In total, from 1971 to 2016, 2176 copies of all versions of the 2TE116 diesel locomotive were produced. However, due to russian aggression and occupation of the city of Luhansk in 2014, the production came to a halt.
The tag in your possession has been crafted from the scrapped parts of the locomotive number 2TE116-0055 section ‘B’. This locomotive was specially built in June 1973 for Vuhlehirska Power Station, where the section “A” still remains in operation use today.
Since 2005 section ‘B’ has been stored at Poltava Locomotive Repair Plant. In 2015 section ‘B’ was put up for sale, but with no interest, it was disassembled and scrapped in the mid 2020’s.
With the help of Poltava Locomotive Repair Plant, DMZ Karpaty and Rolling Stock Tags team, the limited series of tags was crafted for railway enthusiast around the world to enjoy!
