Description

Few aircraft embody the turbulent post-Soviet era of aviation quite like EP-QFB “Foxtrot Bravo”. Today, its remarkable story continues through this exclusive Fuselage Creations collectable.

The Yakovlev YAK-42 occupies a unique place in aviation history. Developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau as a three-engine medium-range airliner, only 187 aircraft were completed between 1977 and 2003, making it one of the rarest jetliners to remain in commercial service. By 2025, fewer than twenty examples remained operational worldwide.

 The aircraft behind this tag is among the most fascinating YAK-42s ever built. Completed in 1999 as one of the final YAK-42s produced, the aircraft performed its maiden flight under the registration RA-42443. Yet despite being factory-new, it found itself without a customer. The collapse of Soviet-era aviation markets and the rapid arrival of Western-built aircraft left many Russian manufacturers struggling to secure orders, and this nearly completed Yakovlev remained unsold.

Its fortunes changed in 2003 when the Russian government transferred the aircraft to the Czech Republic as part of a debt settlement agreement. The aircraft then embarked on an extraordinary journey across multiple continents and identities. Registered at various stages as 9L-LDS in Sierra Leone and ER-YCF in Moldova, it eventually arrived in Dubai, UAE, where it was offered for sale as a virtually unused airliner carrying a price tag of $12.1 million.

A new chapter began in 2006 when Iranian operator Fars Qeshm Air acquired the aircraft, registering it as EP-QFB. As one of only four YAK-42s in the airline’s fleet, “Foxtrot Bravo” finally entered the service for which it had been built years earlier.

What followed transformed the aircraft into a true aviation legend.

In 2012, EP-QFB was ferried to Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine, for engine maintenance. During its stay, Fars Qeshm Air lost its Air Operator Certificate (AOC), triggering years of legal disputes over the ownership. The aircraft became stranded far from home, and in September 2014 the aircraft was impounded by the Ukrainian Border Force authorities. There it remained for more than a decade as the reminder of a complete but forgotten relic of another era.

In March of 2025, “Foxtrot Bravo” was finally offered at public auction in the condition, described as “in desperate need of repair”. Our team had a rare opportunity to inspect the aircraft in person. Despite years of abandonment, it remained visually close to complete and represented an exceptional candidate for preservation. Unfortunately, its future had already been decided. Rather than restoration, the aircraft was destined to be dismantled for parts and ultimately scrapped.

Recognising the historical significance of this unique airframe, we secured the original material directly from the aircraft before its disappearance. Each tag has been crafted from the genuine fuselage skin of EP-QFB, preserving a tangible piece of one of the most extraordinary YAK-42s ever built. From an unsold factory-fresh airliner, to an international debt settlement, to years of legal limbo and eventual recovery, few aircrafts can claim a journey as remarkable as “Foxtrot Bravo”.

Its flying days may be over, but legacy now lives on in the collections of aviation enthusiasts around the world.
