Description
The KAB stands for “Korrektiruyemaya Aviatsionnaya Bomba,” which translates to “Correctable Aerial Bomb”. These are old and outdated Soviet-era bombs with extendable wings and a guidance system. Recently, Russians has upgraded a number of bombs in their inventory, such as 500, 1500 and 3000 kilogram models showing the ‘KAB’ abbreviation on them.
The weapon has proved to be extremely effective for the enemy’s use and it can be launched from various platforms, such as Sukhoi’s 30 and 35 and most commonly 34. What makes these bombs extremely dangerous and lethal is the fact that they cannot be intercepted in mid-air. Once they are dropped, they only fly for 70 seconds or less and appear as small dots on radars before disappearing.
But, one thing if anything, is that Ukrainians has consistently proved and shown their ability to adapt and carry on. The recent introduction of the Western air defence Patriot system of F-16 fighter jets poses a significant threat and impediment for Russian jets launching the KABs and is effecting their precision and effectiveness. The on-going war in Ukraine is the war of constant technology development, adaptation and advancement, which, hopefully, will make KABs turn into a threat of the past.
The tag in your possession was crafted from the wings of the crashed KAB bomb, which failed to reach its target.
