Description

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 “Foxbat” was a Cold War-era supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft. It remains one of the fastest military aircraft to ever enter service, capable of flying at speeds exceeding Mach 3+. The Foxbat still holds the world record for the highest altitude reached by a piloted, air-breathing aircraft – 125,000 feet (38 kilometres).

Unlike most Soviet Air Force aircraft, The MiG-25 did not serve in standard air force formations; instead, it was operated by the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Its impressive performance was designed not only for reconnaissance missions, but also to defend Soviet airspace against high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft such as the U-2 and strategic bombers like the B-52.

In your possession today is a tag crafted from an early MiG-25RBS (Foxbat-D), equipped with the Sablya-E airborne radar mounted on both the left and right sides of the nose. The Sablya-E was a high-altitude radar system, optimised for operation between 17 and 24 kilometres. It could scan a 25-kilometre-wide strip of terrain from a distance of 42 to 47kilometres.

This particular Foxbat-D, factory number 51001009, began its operational career with the 48th independent Guards Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment at Kolomiya Air Base, located in the Carpathian mountains (then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the aircraft was transferred to the Kyiv Military Aviation Engineering Academy, where it was used as ground training equipment for Soviet Air Force engineers and ground crews.

In the early 2000s, following the retirement of the MiG-25 from service with the Ukrainian Air Defence Forces, the aircraft was donated by the Academy to the Oleg Antonov State Aviation Museum. During the restoration of the vertical stabiliser, the Fuselage Creations team managed to upcycle parts of the aircraft into commemorative tags, allowing aviation enthusiasts around the world to own a tangible piece of aviation history.
