Description

The Supermarine Spitfire remains an icon of British aviation and a celebrated air combat hero of World War II. The Royal Air Force fighter is renowned for its pivotal role in the Battle of Britain and in the liberation of Western Europe alongside Allied forces – some of which operated the type both during and after the war. The Spitfire continues to capture the hearts of enthusiast, with around 70 examples still airworthy today.

The tag in your possession has been crafted from the starboard aileron upper skin of Spitfire T9 PV202/G-CCCA, removed during the aircraft’s overhaul.

Originally built as a single-seat Spitfire LF.IXc, the fighter served with several units across Europe during WWII. Advancing eastward through the continent, it flew numerous combat sorties in support of British and Allied operations, contributing to victory over the Third reich.

After the war, the Spitfire was placed in storage for five years before being selected by Vickers-Armstrong for conversion into a T9 trainer – a post-war variant designed to meet the needs of various Spitfire operators for pilot training. The aircraft subsequently served with the Irish Air Corps until the early 1950s. Following its military career, it passed through several private owners before being acquired and restored by the Aircraft Restoration Company in the new millennium. After extensive work, it returned to flight as PV202/G-CCCA.

In 2022, the aircraft entered overhaul, during which the part used to create these tags was likely removed. Today, the aircraft is operated by Aerial Collective, based at Duxford Airfield.
