Description
This collection celebrates the J-7 (歼-7), a legendary supersonic interceptor that served as the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force for decades. While originally derived from the MiG-21, the J-7 evolved through decades of Chinese engineering into a highly capable, unique platform.
We are offering material from two distinct generations: the J-7II, a Cold War workhorse, and the J-7E, the ultimate aerodynamic evolution of the series.
J-7II: The “B” Series Veteran
The J-7II (also known as the J-7B) represents the second major iteration of this supersonic interceptor. It was the version that truly proved China could refine and mass-produce a complex supersonic platform.
The “Overheated” History
- Engine & Power: The J-7II introduced the WP-7II engine, increasing thrust from 3900kN to 4200kN (5750kN to 6100kN with afterburner).
- A Technical Oversight: While the engine was more powerful and fuel-efficient, it increased exhaust temperatures from 700°C to 800°C. This increase was initially overlooked, eventually leading to the grounding of the entire fleet years after production ended in 1986.
- Design Changes: This variant is distinguished by the removal of the small window behind the canopy and the ability to carry a larger 720-liter belly tank.
J-7E: The Ultimate Double-Delta Evolution
The J-7E is visually the most striking of all J-7 variants. It represents the peak of the airframe’s development before the PLAAF transitioned to 4th and 5th-generation fighters.
The Double-Delta Advantage
- Radical Wing Design: The J-7E is instantly recognizable by its double-delta wing design. This modification drastically improved the aircraft’s maneuverability and low-speed handling, turning a classic interceptor into a potent dogfighter.
- Global DNA: This model features the Pointer 2500 ranging radar, a system with a fascinating lineage—based on Italian technology which was itself a licensed copy of the Israeli Elta EL/M-2001B.
- The Final Batch: Production ended in 2001, with only about 260 airframes built, making the J-7E a relatively rare and highly sought-after artifact.
Material Characteristics
- J-7II Skin: Features the classic service finishes from the 1980s.
- J-7E Skin: These fragments showcase the clean, often white or high-visibility finishes seen in the attached photos, including sections of the distinctive double-delta wing structure and reinforced internal bracing.
