This artifact comes from the J-11B (歼-11B), nicknamed the “Responsive Dragon” (应龙 – Yīng Lóng), and known by NATO as the Flanker-L. It represents more than just a powerful air superiority fighter; it symbolizes the breakthrough of Chinese aviation sovereignty. The J-11B successfully transformed a foreign design into an indigenous platform, setting the stage for all future Chinese Flanker derivatives.
Technological Independence: A Domestic Powerhouse
The J-11B program, with the first mock-up unveiled by SAC (Shenyang Aircraft Corporation) in mid-2002, had the primary goal of eliminating the J-11’s dependency on Russia.
- Domestic Content: By 2011, approximately 90% of the J-11B was suggested to be composed of subsystems and parts designed and manufactured entirely in China. Three prototypes were delivered to the PLAAF for testing in 2006.
- Radical Upgrade: The aircraft features the powerful Type 1493 mechanically scanned pulse doppler fire control radar. This system is comparable to American models like the AN/APG-63 or AN/APG-65, boasting a maximum detection range of approximately 150km, capable of tracking 20 targets simultaneously, and engaging up to six targets at once. This capability marks a significant leap from the base J-11.

- The Shenyang WS-10 turbofan engine (powering the Block 02 variant).

Operational History: Proving Grounds
The J-11B quickly entered active service, demonstrating its capabilities in both exercises and sensitive operational airspace.
- Joint Drills: It participated in the first-ever joint operational aerial maneuvers conducted by the PLAAF in Pakistan with the PAF, during the Shaheen 1 exercise in March 2011.
- Frontline Intercepts: The J-11B was famously involved in a high-profile incident in August 2014 when one aircraft intercepted a US Navy P-8 Poseidon in the South China Sea.
