The Hawker Hurricane is a British single-seat fighter aircraft of the 1930s – 40s which was designed and built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd for service with the Royal Air Force. It was overshadowed in the public consciousness by the Supermarine Sptifire during the Battle of Britain in 1940, but the Hurricane inflicted 60% of the losses sustained by the Luftwaffe in the campaign, and faught in all the major theatres of the Second World War.
LF363 is an airworthy example currently flown by the Battle of Britain memorial flight and has had a rather eventful history.
On 11th September 1991 Hurricane LF363 was enroute to Jersey when its engine suffered a camshaft failure. The pilot attempted to force land the aircraft but unfortunately the engine failed completely and the Hurricane stalled and crashed onto an airfield with the undercarriage still retracted. It was soon engulfed in flames. The pilot was able to scramble out and was fortunate to escape with a broken ankle and minor burns.
The damage to LF363 was severe.
The wreck was moved back to base and sat looking very sad for three years, whilst its future was discussed at high level. Eventually, it was decided that, with airworthy Hurricanes being so rare, LF363 would be rebuilt, but the flight had to sell one of its Spitfires to fund it.
A painstaking rebuild was carried out over the next four years to make it airworthy again. On 29th September 1998, Hurricane LF363 flew for the first time in seven years. LF363 subsequently rejoined the flight and continues to serve, 33 years after it was nearly destroyed.
